Black Aswan Granite is the most internationally recognized Egyptian black granite. Quarried in the Aswan region of southern Egypt, it is a dense, fine-grained, jet-black stone with subtle silver micro-flecks and exceptional polish reflectivity — the global default for dark monuments, kitchen countertops, and statement architectural surfaces.
This guide covers what makes Black Aswan unique, how to specify it correctly for your project, and what to expect during export from Egypt.
Character and origin
Black Aswan is quarried in the Aswan granite belt of Upper Egypt — the same geological region that supplied pharaonic obelisks and statues thousands of years ago. The stone has a tight crystalline matrix, very fine grain, and an almost uniformly black ground that gives it consistent appearance across large lots.
Typical applications
Black Aswan is specified for memorial monuments and headstones (where the deep polish holds engraved detail crisply), dark kitchen countertops, lobby flooring, elevator surrounds, high-traffic commercial floors, and statement façade panels. Its low water absorption and high abrasion resistance make it equally suitable for exterior cladding in any climate.
Forms and standard sizes
Available forms include raw blocks (~18–25 tons), gangsaw slabs (~2.6–3.0 m × 1.6–2.0 m), cutter slabs (~2.4 × 1.2 m), tiles (30×30 to 80×80 cm), and cut-to-size production. Standard thickness is 2 cm and 3 cm for slabs; 1, 1.5, and 2 cm for tiles; 4 and 5 cm available on request.
Finish options
Polished is the signature finish — Black Aswan polishes to a deep mirror surface that maximizes contrast and reflectivity. Honed delivers a smooth matte. Flamed, bush-hammered, and sandblasted create slip-resistant textures for external flooring. Leathered offers a softer tactile alternative for premium kitchens.
Packing and export
Black Aswan slabs ship in heavy-duty A-frame wooden bundles with foam interleaves, corner protection, and steel banding. Tiles pack into ISPM-15 fumigated wooden crates. Blocks load loose with hardwood dunnage. Each slab is numbered and matched to the packing list. Mixed containers can combine Black Aswan with other Egyptian granites to optimize shipment volumes.
