Egyptian granite is exceptionally well suited to outdoor flooring thanks to its hardness, very low water absorption (typically below 0.4%), and proven resistance to UV, weathering, and freeze–thaw cycles. The right combination of granite type, thickness, and surface finish will deliver a floor that performs for decades in any climate.
This guide covers which Egyptian granites are most commonly specified for exterior flooring, and how to specify them correctly.
Granites best suited to outdoor flooring
Black Aswan Granite — for dark feature flooring, monumental plazas, and statement entrances. Red Aswan Granite (light, medium, dark) — historic warm-toned exterior paving. New Halayeb and Halayeb Granite — contemporary greys for commercial plazas, transit hubs, and large pedestrian areas. Grey Shirka, Sherka, Karnak, and Sholman — alternative greys with characterful mineral textures. Yellow Verdi, Green Verdi, and Verdi Ghazal — earth-toned landscape paving for garden, heritage, and naturalistic schemes.
Finish: always textured for outdoor flooring
For exterior flooring, always specify a textured slip-resistant finish: flamed, bush-hammered, or sandblasted. Avoid polished finishes outdoors — polished granite becomes very slippery when wet.
Thickness and format
For pedestrian outdoor flooring, 3 cm is the standard recommended thickness. For vehicular or heavy-load areas, 4–5 cm is recommended. Standard tile sizes from 30×30 up to 80×80 cm are common; large-format pavers up to 1 m × 1 m can be produced cut-to-size.
Climate considerations
All Egyptian granites are frost-resistant when correctly installed with proper substrate drainage. For coastal projects, granite is essentially immune to salt-spray weathering. For very hot climates, lighter-colored granites (New Halayeb, White Halayeb, Rosa) reduce heat absorption.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can polished granite be used outdoors?+
Polished granite is technically durable outdoors but becomes very slippery when wet — for outdoor flooring always specify flamed, bush-hammered, or sandblasted.
What is the best Egyptian granite for a swimming pool surround?+
Flamed New Halayeb or flamed Halayeb are popular choices — light enough to stay cool underfoot, with excellent slip resistance and weather durability.
